Huntington Beach Police Blotter

Ok, I'm going to take a short break from reporting on Vietnam because this was quite humorous to me (and I'm getting pretty busy at work as well). I just ran into this weekend police blotter in the OC Register and I thought it was... interesting. Are these the only kinds of calls that Huntington Beach police receive on a daily basis, or is the Register only publishing the entertaining ones? There are a few incidents here that are serious, so I don't mean those. But can you seriously read through this list without chuckling at least once?

Weekend Blotter: Lost taxi customer relieves herself in street

A taxi driver told police at 1:42 a.m. Saturday that a female customer had gotten out of the cab near Heil Avenue and Rhine Drive and defecated in the street.

The woman then got back in the cab and gave directions to her residence but when they arrived, the house wasn't hers.

Police arrived and assisted the woman in finding her home.

Goldenwest Street, 15700 block, suspicious circumstances. A swap meet shopper told police he thought he had found a saw that had previously been stolen from among items being sold by a vendor, 1:55 p.m.

Beach Boulevard, 17900 block, disturbance. Three transients were yelling at passing customers in front of a store at 2:13 p.m.

Main Street and Garfield Avenue, narcotics activity. A caller reported that three people were smoking out of a "crack pipe" at 4:37 p.m.

Alabama Street, 1600 block, traffic hazard. A refrigerator was in the middle of the street, 2:36 a.m.

Billingsgate Lane, 20200 block, disturbance. Someone at a party was urinating off a balcony at 3:35 a.m.

Hillview Circle, 16500 block, disturbance. A caller told police that someone in a neighboring residence was watching a "porn video" and it was "very loud," 8:40 a.m.

Detroit Avenue, 200 block, burglary in progress. A caller told police that one of a group of teenage boys was being physically detained after they were seen attempting to steal something and the other boys had rode off on bicycles, 11:50 a.m.

Newland Street and Hamilton Avenue, traffic collision. A black Nissan Altima and a motorcycle were involved in a collision and the motorcycle was wrecked, 5:23 p.m.

Sometimes, Xanghe, it just might be a reflection of the culture of the area you live in.

But if you want funny, you have to move to Provo, UT. When I started at BYU, back in 1998, the student newspaper had a "police beat" section reporting activity from the past week. The newspaper stopped printing the section for awhile, and then, by the time I had returned from Cali, had decided only to print the "normal" stuff.

For example:

"Fall 1997 - A student reported that an individual driving a white Mazda followed her from the Bean Museum to the parking lot next to the Marriott Center. While the victim was in her car, the driver of the Mazda pulled up along the left side of her car, got out with his pants down, and began making obscene movements to the song "Me so Horny." She drove away and notified the police of the incident, and gave a description of the man. The man has light blond hair, is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds.

Winter 1998 - At 7:20 a.m., March 20, police received a report of animals being found in the men's restroom on the seventh floor of V-Hall of Deseret Towers. The responding officers found five live chickens in a cardboard box, 50 dead goldfish in the sinks and a layer of straw six to eight inches deep covering the bathroom floor. An investigation led to the identification of the truck that was used to transport the straw. Charges are pending against the owner of the truck and police are continuing an investigation to identify others involved with the incident.

Winter 1998 - While walking up the northwest stairs of the Jesse Knight Humanities Building, a student was repeatedly pinched in the buttocks by an unknown male individual behind him. The suspect fled when he was confronted by the victim. The suspect is described as a 5-foot-6-inch, 160-pound man, with blond hair and approximately 25 years old.

Fall 2000 - A student's Jeep was stolen between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. while he was at church on Oct. 22. While walking south on 900 E. the student saw two girls driving his jeep heading north. He ran into the road to stop the suspects but they swerved and kept driving. Later a female contacted the University Police and asked if anyone had reported a stolen vehicle. She reported that she was supposed to pick up a Jeep her brother had borrowed and return it to Heber City. The keys would not work in the Jeep so she tried the column and it started. She delivered the Jeep to Heber City but later realized it was not the right vehicle when her brother called to ask why the Jeep was still in the parking lot. The Jeep was returned undamaged and the woman paid for the gas used. No citation was issued."

Alas, nowadays nobody at BYU has fun like my generation did:

"Sept. 15: The Creamery on Ninth East reported an argument. The confrontation began with two parties, then a third party attempted to intervene. The agitation was over the use of an Ipod.

Oct. 13: A student reported two male students throwing acorns off the bridge near the law building on East Campus Drive, hitting another student. When questioned, the male students said they were throwing acorns into the tops of trees to see the reactions of students who thought animals were making the noises in the trees. The students were asked to stop throwing acorns.

Nov. 24: An individual in Deseret Towers reported five suspicious men playing pool in the lobby of one of the halls. Upon investigation it was found the men were simply students playing pool with their girlfriends.

Sept. 23: An assault was reported at the BYU vs. Utah State football game on Saturday. The victim, a male BYU student, was standing in front of the suspect, a female BYU student, and obstructing the female's view of the game. The female asked the male, who didn't have a ticket in that section of the stadium, to sit down or move. The man refused. An argument ensued and the event's staff asked the man to sit down, which he would not. The male victim allegedly called the suspect a derogatory name and asked her, "What are you going to do to get me to sit down? Slap me?" The female suspect then slapped the male victim. The victim did not press charges."

What a great alma mater.

Ha! That's great. For me, I think the humor comes because whoever is writing these incidents is trying to write them in the most mundane and dry language, which makes it all the more hilarious to me. Like Ben Stein. "The female suspect then slapped the male victim." LOL That's far more entertaining to me than someone trying to make a joke out of it. I don't know, I'm just weird.

what made me laugh about OC's police beat, is that I can picture half the stuff happening.

The refrigerator in the middle of the street? I read that and asked, what else? Only the fridge?

That's what makes OC so *interesting* -- I saw a house made out of broken tiles (the WHOLE house) in gaudy colors on the HGTV network the other night. Where were they from? OC.
